Description:
1847 Seated Dollar, PR63
Rarely Seen Early Proof
1847 $1 PR63 PCGS. CAC. Unlike its circulation strike counterpart, proof dollars of this date are rarely seen. Only 20-30 pieces are believed to have been struck with an estimated 20 or fewer proofs believed extant today. Seated dollar collectors are well aware of the bright semiprooflike finish in the fields of many Seated dollars from the 1840s and 1850s. Apparently some were convincing enough that "many deceptive business strikes" were masquerading as proofs according to Walter Breen. A roster of known proofs was attempted in our 2008 ANA Auction, but this piece does not appear on the roster. The fields are deeply mirrored and each side has deep gray and blue patina splashed in an irregular pattern. Light underlying hairlines explain the PR63 grade. Population: 2 in 63, 4 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24ZX, PCGS# 6988)
