Description:
1847 PR 65 NGC. A rare proof Seated dollar and the first example we have offered in several years. It is estimated that only 20-30 proofs were struck, and of course, far fewer exist today. A number of deceptive prooflike business strikes are known, and the presence of these pieces clouds the estimated number of proof survivors as many prooflike examples have been offered in the past as legitimate proof strikings. In addition to being certified, this piece "carries its own credentials." It is an unmistakable proof whose fields are deeply reflective, the rims are broad, and all striking details are fully brought up. The obverse is diagnostically correct also with the positioning of the date in perfect alignment with the dentils as listed in Breen (1977). The diagnostic die scratch is not apparent on the reverse, but this was probably effaced by die polishing in the mint. Deeply toned over both sides in mottled shadings of cobalt-blue, pale golden, and violet. The patination conceals a few light hairlines. The only surface imperfection worthy of singular mention is a tiny rim bump on the reverse at 5 o'clock. An exceptional example of this very rare and seldom offered proof Seated dollar. This is the finest example certified by either of the major services (1/95). (NGC ID# 24ZX, PCGS# 6988)
