Description:
Elusive Choice Proof 1847 Seated Dollar
1847 $1 PR 64 PCGS. An elusive early proof issue from the Seated dollar series, one of an estimated 20 to 30 pieces struck for the fledgling collector market. Even fewer, perhaps less than a dozen coins, exist today. This specimen, unlike a number of deceptive prooflike business strikes, is an unmistakable proof with deeply reflective fields, broad, squared-off rims, and striking details that are fully brought up in all areas, being also diagnostically correct in the alignment of the date and the denticles, as described in the 1977 Breen reference on proof coinage. Pale violet toning gravitates to the borders, and flashes of peripheral blue iridescence are also seen on the obverse. There is a touch of haziness in the obverse fields that limits the effect of wispy hairlines. All in all, one of the nicest proof 1847 dollars we have seen or offered. Population: 5 in 64, none finer (11/99).
From the Richard Doyle Collection. (NGC ID# 24ZX, PCGS# 6988)
