Description:
Proof 1848 Seated Liberty Dollar Rarity
1848 $1 PR62 PCGS. Within a series of noted rarities, the 1848 issue is certainly among the rarest of the proof Seated dollars. Of the estimated 25-35 specimens originally coined, Bowers, in his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, speculates that between nine and seventeen examples are extant today. PCGS has certified a mere three '48 proof dollars, and NGC has seen just nine of these coins (11/05). The meager output of 15,000 business strike dollars produced this year focuses added attention on the proof issue.
The PR62 specimen offered here exhibits crisp definition on the design elements, and each side is awash in dappled reddish-brown, cobalt-blue, yellow-gold, and golden-brown patina. The reverse is relatively devoid of mentionable abrasions, while the obverse displays a few minute marks on Liberty's neck, cheek, and left breast. A trio of small die chips below Liberty's left breast are indicative of the issue. Population: 1 in 62, 1 finer (11/05).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24ZY, PCGS# 6989)
