Description

1850 Seated Dollar, PR66
Original, Open 5 Variety, Breen-5443
Ex: Starr, Silverman, Sweet, Lee

1850 $1 PR66 NGC. Breen-5443. Recut 0 in date. As noted in the pedigree below, this is the Schaeffer, Starr, Silverman, Sweet, Lee specimen. Although still a major rarity, the proof Seated dollars of this date are more plentiful than the dates in the 1840s. Perhaps 30 to 40 examples survive today, although further study is needed. The obverse has an Open 5 and recutting on the digit 0, and this example has the reverse used throughout the 1840s, with two small projections on the right side of the final A. This issue is not as rare as the early dates, but is still infrequently encountered. There is no evidence of die cracks or other defects that would suggest production at a later date.

Some proof examples from this die marriage are known with obverse cracks, suggesting they may have been restrikes, produced years later.

The present example is undoubtedly an original of the Open 5 variety. There is no crack through the base of the date. The obverse portrait is modestly frosted, while the remaining features are reflective beneath a dusting of original dove-gray and steel-blue patina. This is a wholly original Premium Gem with a needle-sharp strike. Pedigree markers appear in the form of a small obverse toning spot on Liberty's torso and four planchet voids (as struck) in the reverse field: two above the ES in STATES, one above the T in UNITED, the final one below the first A in AMERICA. Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (6/13).
Ex: T.J. Schaeffer, Noble, Pennsylvania; Floyd T. Starr (Stack's, 10/1992), lot 593; Morris Silverman Collection (Heritage, 4/2002), lot 4077; Rod Sweet Collection (Bowers and Merena, 7/2005), lot 1011; Jack Lee III / Dallas Signature (Heritage, 11/2005), lot 2238.
