Description

1854 Seated Dollar, PR64
A Rarely Encountered Pre-1858 Date

1854 $1 PR64 NGC. Vivid aquamarine and olive-gold embraces this fully struck and beautifully preserved Choice proof Seated dollar. A small granular area beneath the first T in STATES provides an identifier as well as a tight cluster of darker spots to the right of the eagle's neck. Struck from the usual proof obverse die with what Bowers (1993) calls "a triangular raised defect or 'island' above and to the right of the numeral 5 in the date." Duncan Lee (2006) suggests the defect is the top of a misplaced 4. It may also represent an upper left fragment of the crosslet of a misplaced 4. The reverse die has a light horizontal die line beneath the E in ONE. As is the case with all pre-1858 proofs of the series, the 1854 is very rare and highly desirable. Census: 7 in 64, 2 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2528, PCGS# 6997)
