Very Rare 1855 Proof Seated Dollar--The Finest Certified1855 PR 65 PCGS. Somewhere between 40 and 75 proofs were struck of this year, a tiny mintage to be sure, but this date is actually rarer than even that mintage would indicate. Breen estimates that some 50 to 60 proofs survive, but Bowers believes the number to be significantly lower because of the number of deceptively deep, mirrored prooflikes known of this date. This is the finest proof of this date that has been certified by either of the major services, and it is a very impressive coin. Obviously cared for since the year of issue, there are no distracting contact marks on either side. The fields are deeply mirrored, and if one looks closely enough very shallow hairlines can be made out, but these are well concealed beneath the deep, variegated sea-green and rose tinted patina that covers both sides. An impressive Seated dollar, and of considerable importance as an early date struck in the proof format. (NGC ID# 2529, PCGS# 6998)
