Description:
Proof 1856 Seated Dollar
1856 PR 62 PCGS. Although the exact number of proofs struck in 1856 is not known, it is generally believed that somewhere between 60 and 125 pieces were originally produced. Of that number, Walter Breen stated that probably 40 or so proofs might still be extant today. This piece shows the diagnostic die lines in the field above ITE of UNITED on the reverse. Visibly hairlined, this being the primary reason for the coin's grade, each side shows just the slightest overlay of color with deeper specks at the margins. There are no prominent marks on either side. Population: 2 in 62, only 7 finer (6/95). (NGC ID# 252A, PCGS# 6999)
