Description:
1857 Seated Dollar, Brightly Mirrored PR66
Excellent Aesthetic Qualities
1857 $1 PR66 NGC. The 1857 Seated dollar proof was made in a fairly small but unknown quantity, estimated by Bowers in his Buyer's Guide to Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States at 50 to 100 pieces, where he further offers that "5 to 12" examples survive in PR64 or finer condition. The desirability of proofs is redoubled by the lack of high-grade business strikes, which seldom appear for sale. The finest certified at PCGS is a sole PR65 example, making this PR66 NGC piece tied for numerically finest with a handful of other submissions at NGC in PR66 and PR66 Cameo -- seven in all, although we doubt that they are seven different coins. In any case, it is difficult to conceive of any example with much higher aesthetic or technical appeal than the present piece, originally patinated in shades of pink-gold with vivid cobalt-blue near the obverse rim. and a daub of brilliant sunset-orange around Liberty's head. The reverse toning is more subtle pinkish-gray. A loupe reveals no mentionable contact save for a single vertical mark above the E of ONE, but it also confirms a bold strike -- unusual for the issue. Superb quality. Census: 4 in 66, 2 in 66 Cameo, 1 in 66+ Cameo, none numerically finer (10/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 252B, PCGS# 7000)
