Description:
Illustrious Proof-Only 1858 Seated Dollar PR62
1858 $1 PR62 PCGS. In 1858 the U.S. Mint, under the directorship of James Ross Snowden, began publicly offering proof coins to collectors. The 1858 Seated dollar is among the most illustrious and widely recognized dates in the 1840-1873 series, one that was produced solely in proof format. It is also the sole proof-only issue in the series, and as such it is both highly coveted and widely sought. The U.S. Mint began recording the numbers of proofs coined only in the following year, 1859, but the current 2007 Guide Book lists 300+ proof coins struck. About half that number show in the combined NGC/PCGS population reports.
This piece was struck from the same reverse die used for some 1857 proofs, identifiable by a prominent rust lump over the left base of the L in DOL. The otherwise golden-tinged surfaces reveal blushes of pale copper-tan iridescence in select obverse field areas. Sparkling mint luster is prominent on both sides. Scattered hairlines explain the PR62 designation. Two circular reverse planchet flaws, one in the field before the eagle's beak and a second smaller one beneath the N in UNITED, are noted for pedigree purposes. Population: 21 in 62, 39 finer (6/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 252C, PCGS# 7001)
