Description

1859 Seated Dollar, Cameo PR64
Seldom-Seen Date, Impressively Contrasted

1859 $1 PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The official mintage of proof 1859 dollars may have been 800 pieces, but far fewer were actually distributed, with a net after melting being no more than 450 proofs. Because of the cameo contrast, this piece would appear to have been one of the first struck from a fresh pair of dies. Initially this impressive dollar appears brilliant, but there is actually a slight, even accent of reddish patina over each side. The fields and devices are strongly contrasted. The only contact marks we see are a small cluster just above the head of the eagle. Population: 7 in 64 Cameo, 5 finer (11/12).
