Choice Brilliant Proof 1859 Seated Dollar1859 $1 PR64 NGC. Of the 800 proof Seated Dollars that the Philadelphia Mint prepared in 1859, no more than 450 pieces found their way into collectors' hands. As the anticipated public demand failed to materialize, the remaining pieces met their fate in the melting pot. Over the years, many of the distributed specimens have been mishandled to one degree or another and lowered to less desirable states of preservation.
The present specimen displays repunching on the base of the 1 in the date. Only visible under a loupe, this feature is diagnostic of all proof 1859 dollars. Both the obverse and the reverse show a thin peripheral ring of deep antique-golden color. Modestly reflective and free of all but the most inconsequential distractions, the surfaces adequately support the respected PR64 grade.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 252D, PCGS# 7002)
