Magnificent Gem Proof 1859 Seated Dollar1859 $1 PR 66 NGC. Production of proof Seated dollars was increased to 800 coins in 1859, obviously an optimistic figure for the time period as half or better of the original proof mintage in this and the following year was melted after going unsold. Those that did reach collectors are most frequently cleaned or impaired to some degree. Perhaps only a few dozen pieces qualify as Gems today. This magnificent example shows full, watery reflectivity beneath a mixture of violet and sea-green toning that briefly lightens across the eagle. The microscopic repunching on the 1 of the date is further evidence of its proof credentials. Unlike many proof examples of this date, the strike on Liberty's head and the surrounding stars is essentially complete. Population: 14 in 66, none finer (8/99).
