Description:

1860 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR67
Finest Known, Ex: Jack Lee
1860 $1 PR67 NGC. CAC. Although Mint records indicate that 1,330 proof dollars were produced in 1860, many were later melted and Walter Breen recorded a net mintage or distribution of just 527 proofs. Apparently just one die variety is known. The possibility of a second variety cannot be ruled out, but such a discovery is only possible after a detailed analysis of the first variety. The date is about centered between the border and the base of Liberty, or perhaps very slightly above center. The left edge of the base of 1 is over the right edge of a dentil. The shield tip is minutely left of the left upright of the 1. Breen described "horizontal marks in stripes 5, 6, and 7," and Bowers interpreted this to mean on the obverse. There is no visible evidence of such marks on the obverse, although the shield on the reverse has horizontal marks visible in the spaces between several shield stripes. They are especially visible at the top and bottom of each space.

This example is one of just eight 1860 Seated dollars graded PR67, six with the additional Cameo designation. PCGS has certified two examples as PR67 Cameo. Neither service has graded any example finer than PR67 (3/13).

Stars 4 through 6 on the obverse and the top edge of each wing on the reverse are the only soft points on this otherwise boldly struck Superb Gem proof. The surfaces are pristine, with deeply mirrored fields and fully lustrous devices beneath amazing gold, violet, and sea-green toning on the obverse, with lilac-gray, violet, sea-green, and electric-blue toning on the reverse. Probably deserving of a Cameo designation, although the deep toning masks the contrast.
Ex: Jack Lee Collection/FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 3968, where it brought $46,000.
