White Choice Proof 1861 Silver Dollar1861 $1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. This date represents the first Civil War issue that was extensively hoarded, reducing mintages in future years to the point that silver coinage nearly became obsolete. Silver and gold coins did not circulate, and eventually even copper and nickel was hoarded by a concerned public. Proof coins were sold at a premium, and were only acquired by the advanced collectors. This piece is an unabraded if slightly subdued near-Gem with full details and noticeable (though undesignated) cameo contrast. Population: 25 in 64, 8 finer (6/12).
