Description

1863 Seated Dollar, PR65
Rare Civil War Era Proof

1863 $1 PR65 NGC. In the midst of the Civil War, the price of silver coins rose above face value and the Mint made it more difficult for collectors to acquire proofs with greenbacks. Despite this obstacle, however, Bowers concludes that numismatists in such northern cities as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia purchased many of the 460 proof Seated Dollars produced in 1863. Careful preservation of these specially minted coins was not a priority of these early collectors and today, Gem or better specimens are of the utmost rarity. Both sides of this well-cared-for representative display rich olive-gold and steel-violet patina which intermingles with flashes of blue-green iridescence. Its importance as a high grade survivor of this popular Civil War era silver issue cannot be overstated. Census: 13 in 65 (1 in 65+), 9 finer (12/12).
Ex: Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 7/2003), lot 8297.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 23BS, PCGS# 7006)
