Premium Gem Proof 1864 Seated Dollar1864 $1 PR66 NGC. An important opportunity to acquire a Gem Proof example of this elusive Civil War Seated Dollar issue. This is an example of the Centered Date, according to Breen, and cataloged by him as his variety number 2. Breen stated that he believed this variety to be very rare. All told, he gave descriptions of three different obverse dies for the three varieties! This is surprising to us, given the low mintage of just 470 coins. Perhaps at least one of these three varieties is a restrike issued in later years. If that is the case, the most likely candidate is the B-4 variety from Breen's Proof Encyclopedia, with a different obverse and reverse die. This Gem Proof is sharply struck with deeply mirrored obverse and reverse fields beneath pale gold and vivid blue color. The surfaces have only a few minor blemishes, consistent with the grade. The obverse has a small rough area near Liberty's leg.
