Description:
1865 Seated Dollar, Deeply Mirrored PR67
Among the Finest Known
1865 $1 PR67 NGC. The 1864 and 1865 Seated dollar issues are both extremely rare as high-grade business strikes, with only six to 10 examples estimated to have survived in Gem or finer condition, and one or two of the 1865 business strikes in similar grade. Both dates were low-mintage productions to begin with, and most of each were apparently exported. The proofs of each issue are more available, although still quite elusive in Superb Gem. A total of 470 proofs were reported struck of the 1864 Seated dollar, and 500 proofs of the 1865.

Bowers gives an estimate of 48 or so survivors of the 1865 Seated dollar proof in PR65 or finer condition. That is an amount far smaller than the 80 examples that PCGS' CoinFacts website gives as an estimate in PR65 or better. The combined NGC/PCGS certified population reports, which nonetheless seem to be riddled with many duplicates, show 94 Gem or finer proofs in all contrast levels.

This immaculate Superb Gem is fully struck throughout both sides and displays lovely original color in shades of powder-gray, pinkish-blue, and lavender, with deeper rim toning on each side. A couple of tiny charcoal accents within the first two shield stripes should provide future pedigree identification. A coin of remarkable technical and aesthetic quality.
