Description

Rare 1849 Half Dime, PR64
Only One Certified Finer

1849 H10C PR64 PCGS. A tiny mintage of proof half dimes was struck in 1849, estimated by Walter Breen (1988) and Al Blythe (1992) to be possibly five pieces, though the number was perhaps slightly higher. Six examples have been certified by NGC and PCGS, while our records indicate that probably no more than 12 appearances have been seen in public sales within the past 20 years, some of which may well be duplicates.
In any event, the 1849 proof half dime is an extremely rare issue. The near-Gem in this lot is one of three PR64s certified by both services, with a solitary example finer (a PCGS PR65). It is nearly brilliant except for light brown color at the margins. Mildly frosted motifs yield some contrast with the mirrored fields. A faint pinscratch in the right obverse field and a die polish area on the right (facing) knee might help identify the piece. That said, the photo quality in the catalogs of most previous auction appearances prevented us from pedigreeing the coin.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 235H, PCGS# 4425)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
