Proof 1857 Seated Liberty Half Dime Rarity1857 H10C PR65 NGC. This is an immensely popular proof issue because the original mintage was not recorded by the Mint. Such coins are generally surrounded by an aura of mystique that, in not a few cases, has led to an overestimation of rarity. As for the proof 1857 Half Dime, there can be little doubt that the adjective "rare" is appropriate. After all, only 47 specimens have been certified by NGC and PCGS in all grades (1/03), a figure that includes one impaired example and, most likely, a few resubmissions. The present representative is carefully preserved with no post-production features of note. We do, however, see several tiny planchet voids and lintmarks (both are as produced) in the obverse field. Golden tinged with sharp striking detail and a pleasingly reflective finish. (NGC ID# 235M, PCGS# 4436)
