Description:
1861 H10C PR65 PCGS. Deep steel-blue and steel-gray patina covers each side of this Gem proof, one of only 1,000 pieces produced in this Civil War year. Proof and business strike mintages would plummet in the ensuing years as silver and other coins disappeared from circulation, driven out by unbacked fractional currency and hoarding caused by fear over the outcome of the war. The strike is fairly sharp. Certified in a first-generation, small PCGS holder.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 235W, PCGS# 4444)
