Description:
Finest NGC-Certified Half Dime, 1871 PR69 1871 H10C PR69 NGC. V-1. Open topped D in UNITED. The 1871 half dime came with a mintage of 960 coins in proof format. As with the following two issues, the proof 1871 undoubtedly witnessed a fair degree of melting after the Mint Act of 1873 abolished the half dime. If the population figures are any indicator, perhaps one-third or so of the 1871 proofs have survived, as about 300 examples have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined.
It is safe to say that none of the survivors can match the outstanding beauty of the current PR69 specimen. Indeed, this is the only half dime assigned a PR69 rating by NGC in the entire half dime series! A coat of medium intensity cobalt-blue and light purple toning adheres to the obverse, while lighter hues of this coloration are joined by champagne-gold on the reverse. The immaculately preserved surfaces yield a cameo-like appearance when viewed from all angles, and the lightly frosted motifs are strongly impressed. This may be the only opportunity for the half dime specialist to acquire the finest NGC-certified specimen in the half dime series. Census: 1 in 69 , 0 finer (11/06).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2368, PCGS# 4454)
