Rare 1846 Half Dollar, PR64, Medium Date
Third or Fourth Finest Known
1846 50C Medium Date PR64 PCGS. CAC. The last time we offered a proof 1846 Medium Date half dollar was in our Los Angeles Signature auction (Heritage, 7/2009), lot 1125, a PR65 PCGS piece that realized $51,750. At that time we published a roster of 10 known examples, ranging from two specimens in PR65 -- one each at PCGS and NGC -- down through a trio of certified PR63 pieces, then the Eliasberg PR61 uncertified and the proof examples in the Smithsonian and the George "Buddy" Byers Collection (Stack's, 10/2006), lot 1137. Since that time we have updated the roster to include two more pieces. The present PR64 PCGS is unlisted in that roster. The current PCGS online Population Report shows three PR64 submissions with one PR65 finer (11/11). NGC shows nine submissions ranging from PR62 to PR65.
The obverse of this near-Gem proof appears to match in every respect the die diagnostics of the 1846 Medium Date proof in the Eliasberg sale (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1935: "Under magnification the 4 is double-punched, and has a small projection below its left extremity. Stars 5 and 7 have very tiny artifacts, star 6 is lightly repunched, star 8 shows light repunching, and repunching is seen on stars 10-13."
This piece is fully struck in all areas, with deep, scattered cobalt-blue and rose-yellow patina. The only noticeable mark is a single one in the right obverse field. As one of the apparent finest survivors of this rare issue, this piece should see spirited bidding. (PCGS# 6390)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
