Description

1871 Seated Liberty Half, PR67
Contrasted Obverse

1871 50C PR67 NGC. In 1988 Walter Breen identified four minor varieties of the proof 1871 half dollars in his Proof Encyclopedia from among the 960 pieces struck for the issue; this example appears to be his "weak incomplete stripes [reverse] die of 1870" with the 71 on the obverse apart. His classification was later debunked by Wiley-Bugert who found no variation in the types to justify separate variety listings. The present specimen is an unmarked Superb Gem that is close to a Cameo designation on the obverse, which shows lavish mint frost on silvery centers, although the reverse falls a bit short of the required contrast level. The rims on each side display accents of copper-amber color, and the strike is uniformly bold throughout. There are no contact marks of any import. Census: 2 in 67, 1 finer (6/13). (NGC ID# 27U6, PCGS# 6429)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
