1874 Arrows Half, PR67 Cameo
Tied for Finest Certified
1874 50C Arrows PR67 Cameo NGC. Whether series enthusiast or type collector, any numismatist on the lookout for a high-end Arrows, With Motto proof half dollar will want to take a close look at the present lot. And a great many collectors do keep a sharp eye out for this short-lived type. When the Mint converted to the metric system in 1873, there was a slight increase made to the weight of dimes, quarters, and halves. The Mint followed the form established 20 years previously when the weight was decreased slightly, and arrowheads were added to each side of the date to indicate this decrease. In the case of the weight reduction in 1853, there was a need to designate such coins, as bullion hoarding had been widespread in previous decades because gold and silver coins had a greater intrinsic value than their face value. In the case of metric system conversion in 1873, there probably was no need for such a designation. In the case of the half dollar, its weight was only increased from 12.44 gm to 12.50 gm -- hardly noticeable, but there it is. The coins were not only designated in 1873 but the following year also, thus giving modern-day collectors two years from which to choose this distinctive type.
This coin has obvious grade appeal and is tied for the finest Cameo example of the date in the combined certified population (11/12), and the overwhelming eye appeal gives the specimen even more validation. Gold-to-peach border toning gives way to pale gray at the centers. The toning is thin, permitting the full effect of mirrors that contrast well with the ample frost over the devices.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
