Description

1877 Seated Half, PR66 Cameo
Sole Finest at PCGS

1877 50C PR66 Cameo PCGS. Type Two Reverse. The proof mintage of Seated Liberty half dollars was an unusually low 510 pieces in 1877. The demand for proof sets may have weakened after the large mintage of 1,150 sets in 1876, the country's Centennial year. The number of complete 1877 proof sets issued would have been limited by the mintage of the twenty cent piece, only 350 coins, so some sets may have lacked a specimen of that denomination, or some of the sets may have included coins from the previous year. In any case, the 1877 proof half dollar is certainly a rare date in Premium Gem condition, and almost unobtainable with the Cameo designation.
The present coin is a spectacular piece, with razor-sharp frosty devices and brightly reflective brilliant fields. The black-on-white cameo flash of this coin is quite dramatic. A few minor hairlines are evident in the fields, but they do not detract from the extraordinary visual appeal. Population: 1 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (3/11).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
