Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:

Gem Proof 1849 Quarter
The Garrett-Kaufman Specimen
1849 25C PR65 PCGS. CAC. Offered by us in two previous sales where it was graded PR66 NGC, this impressive Gem is now conservatively graded PR65 PCGS. This piece ranks as one of the two finest known examples. Past numismatists have estimated that only three to five 1849 proof quarters exist, and we believe that the true population is five coins. PCGS shows five certified examples that include PR63, PR65 (2), and PR66 (2). NGC has certified four proofs including PR63 (2), PR64, and PR66, and the latter coin is this example that no longer resides in the NGC holder, so their effective population is only three coins. It is virtually certain that some duplication exists among those certified pieces. A medley of blue-green and tan-gray patina adorns both sides of this charming Premium Gem, taking on deeper hues on the reverse. Relatively strong field-motif contrast is noted on the obverse, while the depth of toning on the reverse tends to mute this variation. An exacting strike imparts excellent definition to the design features of this impeccably preserved Gem proof.

The following enumeration is derived from appearances known to us, and is revised from our earlier rosters:

1. PR66 PCGS. William Dickinson Collection (Chapman Brothers, 3/1894); J.M. Clapp; J.H. Clapp. Clapp estate, 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Estate (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1445; Heritage (2/1999), lot 5915.

2. PR65 PCGS. The present coin, previously certified PR66 NGC.
J. Colvin Randall Collection; John Work Garrett Collection, Johns Hopkins University (Stack's, 3/1976), lot 160; Kenneth C. Long Estate (Bowers and Merena, 5/1995), lot 1089; Phil Kaufman Collection, Part Three (Heritage, 4/2008), lot 2390; Greensboro Collection, Part III (Heritage, 4/2013), lot 4221.

3. Gem Proof. R. Green (10/11/1949); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 5/1998), lot 1315.

4.
PR65/64. Norweb Collection (Bowers and Merena, 3/1988), lot 1585.

5. PR63 PCGS. 1998 FUN Sale (Heritage, 1/1998), lot 6781.
