Superb Proof 1849 Quarter, High R.7 or 8, Ex: Dickinson, Eliasberg, Benson1849 PR 66 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. Very rare. There are various estimates about the number of proofs extant with Breen stating that three were known and Briggs placing the number at "three plus." Either way, the 1849 proof quarter is a major rarity. The surfaces are nicely reflective and display golden-brown patina overall with gunmetal-blue and magenta toning around the rims. Lightly hairlined, each side is remarkably clean and we see no contact marks or mint-made flaws that could be reliably used as pedigree identifiers in the future. However, it is doubtful that the provenance of this important coin will be lost by its new (or future) owners. From the Benson Collection. Only one other PR 66 has been certified by PCGS (a resubmission of this coin, perhaps?)
