Description

Pittman's Choice Proof 1856 Quarter
Unknown Low Mintage

1856 25C PR64 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Pittman. An unknown but small number of proofs were struck of the 1856 quarter. In the 1998 Pittman catalog, Akers estimated that 30 pieces were extant of the 1856 quarter. That is probably still a reliable estimate of survivors. The fields are nicely reflective, even through the significant toning seen on each side. The obverse is light golden with deep blue around the margin, while the reverse is even cobalt-blue. Minimal problems for the grade with only light hairlines evident beneath the toning.
Purchased by John Pittman from Wayte Raymond 5/14/1946 for $25; John Jay Pittman Collection, Part II (David Akers, 5/1998), lot 1333.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 23WH, PCGS# 5552)
