Seldom-Seen 1857 Proof Quarter1857 PR 66 NGC. Proof quarters from this year are very scarce with possibly only 15 to 20 examples believed to exist today, according to Larry Briggs. A coin of this quality and rarity is an important event and one of the unquestioned highlights of the minor coinage in this auction.
The surfaces are toned champagne-golden with a trace of blue at the margins. The fields are very deeply mirrored with few post-striking impairments noted. As a point of interest, the die used to strike the reverse has a prominent bulge over the eagle's right (facing) wing. This same die was used to strike proof quarters from 1856. This is the only PR 66 certified by either service, and as such stands as the finest certified if not the finest known. (NGC ID# 23WJ, PCGS# 5553)
