PR66 1858 Seated Quarter
Only One Coin Finer at NGC

1858 25C PR66 NGC. CAC. The guesses on the mintage of proof 1858 quarters are in the range of 60 to 80 coins. Walter Breen, in the second edition of his Proof Encyclopedia, estimated that 60 to 70 silver-minor proof sets were made originally, along with extras of the silver dollar and the 1858 Flying Eagle cent. Larry Briggs estimated 80 proofs in his reference on Seated quarters, yet today the Guide Book estimates 300 proofs made. The number of certified proofs, even including duplicates, now stands at 116 submissions at NGC and PCGS combined. The present example shows the typical crack found on the proof reverse die connecting the second and third arrowheads. The fields are profoundly mirrored from rim to rim, complementing deep cobalt-blue and violet patina. A small cluster of lint marks appears between the leg and star 13, accounting for the grade but of little import otherwise. Census: 4 in 66, 1 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 23WK, PCGS# 5554)
