Exquisite 1872 Seated Quarter With Gorgeous Toning, Unique PR68 Quality1872 25C PR68 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Briggs 3-C. Although many 1872 Seated Quarters may have been melted after Congress passed the Mint Act of February 12, 1873, we do not know whether or not proofs were affected. We do know, however, that, while more common than similarly dated business strikes in higher grades, the proof 1872 is a significant rarity in grades above the Choice level. The present Superb Gem is the single finest certified survivor (7/02), and it is a newcomer to the NGC Census. This is one of the most lovely proof Seated Quarters that this cataloger has seen, regardless of date. The centers sparkle with bright reflectivity that shines forcefully through delicate champagne tinged overtones. There is some more extensive color at the margins in overlapping cobalt-blue and crimson-russet shades. Both sides are blemish-free, and a tiny die lump (as struck) on the left reverse shield border is diagnostic of this proof delivery. A beautiful coin.
