Description

1873 Arrows Quarter, PR66 Cameo
Superlative, Strongly Contrasted Type Coin

1873 25C Arrows PR66 Cameo NGC. While the earlier 1853-55 Arrows silver coinage types used the arrows to indicate a weight reduction occasioned by the higher price of silver compared to abundant California gold, the later 1873-74 Arrows coinages actually used the same device to signify a slight (minuscule, actually) weight increase. This was made possible by, among other factors, Germany's abandoning of a silver standard and adopting a gold standard in 1872, dumping thousands of tons of silver onto world markets and depressing prices. The actual weight of a .900 fine silver quarter increased from 6.22 gm in 1872 to 6.25 gm -- less than one-half of one percent -- in 1873, an attempt as part of the "Crime of '73" to make U.S. coinage conform to metric (European) equivalents.
This 1873 Arrows proof was one of the 540 examples reportedly produced. The surfaces are brilliant throughout, strongly contrasted, and essentially flawless, although a tiny spot appears in the exergue below the rock. A superlative type coin. Census: 2 in 66 Cameo, 1 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 23XR, PCGS# 85574)
