Part of 1877 Proof Set1877 25C Quarter PR66 Cameo NGC. None of the various authorities can seem to agree on net production figures for the 1877 proof coinage, the quarter being a case in point: See the Breen Proof Encyclopedia quarter entries for 1877 and 1878 for some creative accounting. What is relevant to the present piece is that it is, like other members of this complete 1877 proof set, among the few finest survivors, a coin of marvelous quality. The surfaces are completely silver-white with bold contrast and an equally powerful strike. Minor die cracks appear around the lower reverse periphery. Unlike some of the smaller-denomination proofs dated 1877, the quarter saw an enormous production of business strikes, nearly 11 million pieces. Census: 6 in 66 Cameo, 3 finer (11/12).
