Description:
1884 Quarter, PR69 Cameo
Untoned, Top-Quality Survivor
1884 25C PR69 Cameo NGC. Briggs 2-B. The Motto, No Arrows Seated quarter was produced from 1866-1873 and again from 1875-1891. Only five proofs of this type have received a PR69 designation, all from the last two decades of the series at NGC, and this is one of only three PR69 Cameos for the entire series (6/13). We can hardly overstate the importance of this 1884-dated specimen for superb-quality type purposes. The profound field reflectivity is all the more impressive because of the bright, flashy surfaces devoid of toning. The fields on both sides form a splendid backdrop to fully struck, richly frosted devices. The surfaces retain their blemish-free sheen even under close scrutiny with a loupe. The 1884 Seated quarter was produced to the extent of just 8,875 pieces. Survivors of the 875-piece proof delivery display evidence of light die rust (as struck) on the obverse portrait. In addition, the reverse die was extensively polished during preparation, with the result that the eagle's tail feathers are missing.
