Description

Choice Proof 1866 Shield Nickel
Ideal First-Year Type Coin

1866 5C Rays PR64 PCGS. CAC. The 1866 proof Shield nickel represents the first year of the design, and the reverse was altered in 1867 to remove the distinctive Rays, creating a popular two-year design type. Walter Breen suggested only 125 proofs were struck, but this total seems too small in view of recent population data. The Guide Book listing says 600+ examples were minted, and that figure seems more realistic. This sharply detailed Choice example offers nickel-gray reflective surfaces, with hints of champagne-gold and lavender toning.
