Description

Famously Rare Proof 1867 Rays Nickel

1867 5C Rays -- Environmental Damage -- NGC Details. Proof. The most famous rarity of the Shield nickel series, the proof 1867 Rays has a Guide Book mintage of 25+ pieces. Recent research concludes that 25 originals were struck, in addition to a small but unknown quantity of restrikes. John Dannreuther has written extensively on this issue, and three different obverse dies have been identified. The present specimen has Obverse 1 with a high date and light repunching on the 7 in the date. Dannreuther believes that examples of this variety are originals struck early in 1867. This lot is fully struck, unabraded, and exhibits reflective fields. The borders display moderately granular gray patina, perhaps from long-term storage in a humid climate.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 276H, PCGS# 3818)
