Part of 1877 Proof Set1877 5C Nickel PR66 Cameo NGC. CAC. Just a trace of gold patina complements the pristine silver-gray surfaces with gray-white device high points providing plenty of cameo contrast on this Premium Gem 1877 Shield nickel. The surfaces are unmarked, well-struck, and extremely eye-appealing. Like its three cent nickel counterpart, the Shield nickel of 1877 was also a proof-only issue, struck to the recorded extent of 900 pieces, according to the Guide Book -- or 510-plus according to Breen -- or 1,250 according to Bowers. The series and issue are so popular today, it matters little. Census: 76 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 3 finer (11/12).
