Superb 1878 Shield Nickel--A Must-See Coin1878 PR 67 PCGS. Undoubtedly one of the most attractive Shield nickels we have ever handled, regardless of date. The obverse has a light overlay of pale aqua patina with a central accent of bright golden, while the reverse has a subtly variegated color scheme of aqua and golden. This coloration does much to assure the superb rating of the coin but there is also a technical aspect that cannot be ignored. We see no contact marks, and close examination reveals only the tiniest evidence of carbon flecking. The fields are not deeply mirrored, as often seen on 1878s, but this certainly does not inhibit the overall attractiveness of this superior type piece. Population: 13 in 67, none are finer (10/98).
