Elusive 1854 Proof Three-Cent Silver1854 PR 64 PCGS. Of the greatest rarity and importance as a proof. Proof three-cent silver pieces are usually only found with the Type Two design dated 1857 and 1858. Proofs from the earlier years are extremely elusive, and we have handled only a single 1854 in the past several years. Toned in deep gunmetal-gray and bluish-green shades and imparting an overall glossy finish. The fields are not what one would consider deeply reflective, but this may be due in part to the exceptionally deep color seen over both sides. Somewhere between 12 and 20 proofs are believed to exist today in all grades of this date. Population: 1 in 64, 4 higher (10/96). (NGC ID# 27BZ, PCGS# 3701)
