Description:
1860 Three Dollar Gold
Near-Gem Cameo Proof

1860 $3 PR64 Cameo NGC. Neither proofs nor business strikes were produced of the three dollar gold in any large quantities in 1860 -- 119 of the former, a bit more than 7,000 of the latter -- and both have an extremely low survival rate today. Bowers estimates in his series reference that only 10 to 12 proofs survive, pointing out that perhaps only 20 pieces were actually distributed. Bowers writes: "For decades the 1860 has been viewed as a first-class rarity among Proofs in the $3 series." The actual number surviving appears to be somewhat higher than Bowers' estimate, although it is a virtual certainty that the certified populations are dotted with duplications. This near-Gem Cameo proof offers bright yellow-gold surfaces that are deeply mirrored and noticeably frosted. The faint granularity appearing in the fields is common on proofs. A small planchet flaw occurs beneath the R in DOLLARS. Census: 5 in 64 Cameo, 4 finer (2/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 289Y, PCGS# 88023)
