Description:
NGC 1865 PR 64 Cameo. Original. The 1865 has the lowest mintage prior to 1881 with only 1,165 business strikes produced plus another 25 proofs. Akers estimates that perhaps some 10-12 proofs are still extant. Originals and restrikes are easily distinguished by the position and striking quality of the digits in the date. This is one of the finest pieces known of this very rare date with only 1 other coin having been so graded by the major services and another 3 in higher grade. This is a deeply mirrored coin with moderate frosting on the devices and a mild cameo contrast. There are few contact marks in the fields and the coin has good eye appeal. (NGC ID# 28A5, PCGS# 8028)
