Choice Proof 1871 Three-Dollar Gold, One of 30 Struck1871 PR 64 NGC. The 1871 is yet another in this extraordinary run of rare and underappreciated early proofs in the three-dollar series. Only 30 proofs were issued in 1871, and from that paltry number it is unlikely that more than 14-16 separate pieces still exist today. Among those few survivors, two are in institutions and several display friction, handling marks, or other assorted impairments. This specimen is one of the nicest we have handled. A bit of light patina in the obverse field masks the affect of wispy hairlines, but the reverse is quite choice. Liberty's portrait exhibits a curious double profile, as do several of the proofs from this year.
