Description:
Exceedingly Rare 1874 Proof 64 Three-Dollar
1874 PR 64 PCGS. The 1874 is considered one of the rarest proof three-dollar dates as only 20 pieces were struck. According to current (6/96) population figures, fewer exist today, suggesting that a certain number have been lost forever. PCGS has certified a total of 13 examples, 2 are circulated proofs, NGC has graded 7 examples, all PR 64s. Obviously, a number of these are resubmissions. Today, one estimate places the number extant in the range of 13-16 pieces.
The fields of this coin are deeply mirrored and the devices have a deeply frosted effect, yielding a pleasing, two-toned cameo appearance. The coin was struck using a slightly porous planchet causing a "halo" appearance on the obverse, much like that seen on 1888 proofs. There are several stray hairlines in the fields, but these have virtually no effect on the overall eye appeal of this impressively rare gold coin. Population: 9 in PR 64, 1 finer. (NGC ID# 28AG, PCGS# 8038)
