1874 PR 64 Cameo Three-Dollar Gold, An Underappreciated Rarity1874 PR 64 Cameo NGC. The 1874 is considered by those in the know to be one of the rarest and most underrated proof three-dollar dates in the series, a reputation backed up by a proof mintage of just 20 coins. Today, one estimate places the number extant in the range of 13-16 pieces. Both sides of this choice, yellow-gold example display hints of natural patina and a modest two-toned effect. The coin was struck using a slightly porous planchet causing a "halo" appearance on the obverse, much like that seen on 1888 proofs. There are several stray lines in the fields, but the majority of these are from die polishing, with only a single, more obvious hairline seen just to the left of the portrait. The balance have virtually no effect on the overall eye appeal and grade of this impressively rare gold coin. (NGC ID# 28AG, PCGS# 8038)
