1877 PR 64 Cameo Three-Dollar Gold, Another Unsung Rarity1877 PR 64 Cameo NGC. Much underrated in comparison to its two famous proof-only predecessors, the 1877 is an issue of just 1,468 business strikes and a mere 20 proofs. True proofs of this date can be distinguished from deceptive, prooflike early strikings by a rust spot on Liberty's lower curls and, again, by the date being placed lower on the reverse. The number of auction appearances for 1877 proof threes is rendered useless by the confusion between the two. In actuality, the number of proofs extant is likely between 12-14 pieces. This choice specimen is notable for its originality and displays the slight halo effect as seen on the 1874 proof above. Both sides are lightly patinated, with delicate steel-blue hues clinging to the portrait and interior lettering on the reverse. (NGC ID# 28AK, PCGS# 8041)
