Fully Struck PR66 Deep Cameo
1883 Three Dollar Gold
None Finer at PCGS
1883 $3 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. This Premium Gem Deep Cameo proof 1883 three dollar gold is one of nine such submissions at PCGS, and there are no Deep Cameos finer (11/11). In fact, there are no examples numerically finer at PCGS regardless of contrast level, although NGC has certified three PR67 submissions, including one Cameo and two Ultra Cameo.
By the year 1883, the three dollar gold denomination appeared to be gasping its last breath. Business strikes numbered a mingy 900 pieces, with a complement of some 89 proofs struck during the year. The obverse die was a carryover from the 1882 threes. Breen writes in the Proof Encyclopedia:

"Obv. as on some 1882 proofs, sometimes with rust in feather above T, different from business strikes. Rev. Low date slanting down to right, very top of 1 entirely below serif of L. Owing to low mintage of business strikes (900) this date has become almost as famous as 1881."

The present coin does display a bit of die rust in the feather below T, along with the noted reverse diagnostic. The surfaces are a consistent, even orange-gold, the sole exception a smudge of light red to the right of the 3 in the denomination. The surfaces exhibit excellent mirrored reflectivity, contrasting with moderately frosted devices. There are no mentionable signs of contact, and the strike is full throughout both sides, the reverse being particularly well-detailed and showing off the intricate design to full advantage. Some orange-peel effect appears on the reverse. The added pressure from business strike collectors may lead to strong bidding on this piece, and alert series enthusiasts will come prepared.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28AS, PCGS# 98047)
