Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:
Lovely PR66 1883 Three Dollar Gold
1883 $3 PR66 PCGS. 1883 at the nation's mints was a year chiefly dedicated to the spewing out of millions of unwanted and unneeded Morgan dollars, as mandated by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. Three types of five cent nickels were produced in considerable quantities, but three cent nickel coinage was negligible. Quarters, half dollars, and gold coins below the half eagle were produced in strictly token amounts, while the double eagle was produced only in proof format, to the extent of 92 pieces. The mintage of three dollar gold pieces, as it did in 1881, again dipped below four digits, this time to the extent of 900 business strikes and 89 proofs. Although some earlier researchers, such as Harry W. Bass, Jr., believed that business strikes were struck from the proof obverse die, Breen's proof Encyclopedia says that a different die was used. However, both proofs and some business strikes are seen with a speck of die rust in the plume above the T in LIBERTY, as on the present coin. According to Q. David Bowers' The United States $3 Gold Pieces the reverse die, however, is definitely different on the proof coins. The wreath tops are unconnected and show an area of proof surface between them, while on business strikes the wreath tips touch. The proofs show the peak of the 1 in the date centered beneath the left tip of the serif of the first L in DOLLARS, while on the business strikes this digit is minutely to the left of that position. The present lovely specimen offers rich yellow-gold centers that meld into amber, copper, and sunset-gold hues at the rims on each side. This is one of four specimens graded PR66 at PCGS, while a single specimen at NGC is graded finer, at PR67 Cameo (11/06).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28AS, PCGS# 8047)
