1885 Three-Dollar, Proof 641885 PR 64 NGC. Of the 109 proofs originally struck for collectors, it is now estimated that only about 60 or so still remain, and these rank as very desirable to the numismatic community. The preponderance of the survivors seem to rank in higher grades of preservation, and this specimen is certainly no exception. The moderately mirrored surfaces reflect against devices that are are lightly frosted, perhaps a bit more on the obverse, yielding a mild cameo effect. Gentle opaque patina has developed on both sides, with a bit more showing on the obverse. The surfaces are very clean with some minor porosity in the left obverse field. Population: 10 in PR 64, only 2 finer (11/97). (NGC ID# 28AU, PCGS# 8049)
