1887 $3 PR62 NGC....
Orange-Gold 1887 Three Dollar, PR621887 $3 PR62 NGC. Although only 160 proofs were struck of this date, it appears they were struck in four batches; they can be distinguished from each other by reverse die alignments. This coin is from the first batch, as seen from the normal, 180-degree die alignment. As a way to distinguish genuine proofs from prooflike business strikes, the proofs have the 1 in the date placed just left of the bottom serif of the first L in DOLLARS. On business strikes it is further left, and it helps to have a business strike or photo to make the distinction more apparent. The fields show the usual orange-peel texture seen on proof gold from this era. The orange-gold surfaces are hairlined, explaining the grade, with a few contact marks scattered about.
